What causes a light switch to stop working but light stays on?

A light that stays on when the switch “does nothing” usually means the switch failed in the ON position or the light was wired to constant power. Three-way switches can also leave a light energized if a traveler is miswired. Smart switches can stick if an internal relay fails. If you notice flickering, scorch marks, or a burning smell, stop using it. Electrical issues can lead to fires or shocks.

Quick checks:

  • Try the other 3-way switch, if present.
  • Check a fixture pull-chain.
  • Don’t flip a hot or sparking switch.
